In this post, we're going to take a look at the movie American Pie 1 and see if it's worth watching today. When it was released in 1999, American Pie was a surprisingly successful comedy that offered a new kind of teen experience for audiences following its release. Since then, the film has become an inspiration for many other young comedies exploring similar themes and has spawned four sequels that have been just as successful as its original installment. Following this one, we have American Pie 2 and American Wedding, both of which were released in 2001 and 2003 respectively. Two years later, we saw the release of American Reunion in which we see the characters from the original film reunite and explore what's currently going on with their lives. Today, we're going explore this one further and see if it's worth watching today. But before we do that, let's go over some of the more important facts about it! The Film The movie was directed by Paul Weitz and written by Adam Herz. The film takes place in the town of East Great Falls, Minnesota, which is known for its great senior citizens' golf tournament. Principal photography began on February 6, 1998 and lasted for 20 days. The film was released on April 24, 1999 in 1,170 theaters nationwide. On the day of release it opened at number one with $20 million. It went on to gross $55 million domestically and an additional $65 million overseas for a worldwide total of $109 million. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics and took home the Best Original Screenplay Golden Raspberry Awards in 2000. Popularity for this one has decreased since its release and it is currently thought to be one of the worst sequels ever made. Plot Outline: The Plot: As we mentioned, this movie follows four friends who go off to the East Great Falls senior citizens' golf tournament. Along with them is a girl named Mary Katherine Gallagher (Pell James) who they pick up on their way there. Once they arrive, things take an interesting turn as flashbacks show what happened to each of them which take us all the way back to high school and through their lives as well as those of Mary Katherine's parents. The Cast: The Cast: In this film, we see the return of the stars from the original film. In addition to them, we have a few other famous faces as well. In this movie, Ian McShane and Paul Rust who both reprise their roles as Peter and Jim respectively from the first film have major roles. Also back is Jennifer Coolidge as Michelle Lee who is Mary Katherine's mother. Adam DeVine returns as Nate Stuckey who is a college student going to the tournament.
